I was tought rather this way: dot product is linear. If we have basis e_i, and assume that dot(e_i, e_j)=kroneker_delta(i,j), then we can derive your formula easly. So this is like “Equivalence of the definitions” in wiki https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dot_product
