We were taught these in geometric terms. Dot product is a product with a vector projection, and cross product is a scaled normal.

This view of the cross product is what stops a lot of people from generalizing to other numbers of dimensions. The cross product is better viewed as a parallelogram in the plane determined by the two vectors being multiplied.
