“Why should I care about the performance of everyone else’s programs?” Because then they will be forced to do likewise. All the gains you get from the compiler not being optimized generally rather to specific usecases in all other areas of your program will make up for the losses in one specific area where it’s slower. You can always fork the compiler if it’s important enough
