My only computer is an apple silicon macbook. What are your thoughts on starting with metal?

Worth noting that while apple has “deprecated” openGL on mac, it still works just fine (I’m literally doing something with it right now).
That being said, I think Metal is a fantastic API. Only issue is that you’ll be limited to running on apple products.

My thought was to learn on metal (because it’s a “modern” api) then expand out to vulkan and dx from there. Does that seem reasonable or does the existing resources around opengl make that the better choice for beginners?

I think metal is a fine place to start if you’re keen (motivation is the most important thing) - only advice I have is that rather than thinking of the goal as “learning the API”, try to have an achievement based goal like “make a simple 3d game”. Provides better direction IMO 🙂

Oh yeah for sure. I’ve had an on-rails star fox type idea floating around my mind for a few years now. The remake announcement disappointed me enough to actually start making it! Just gonna be cubes and other primitive shapes for a while tho.
