While I’d love to say some cool future-of-computing ideas, let’s start with the bare minimum:
- No spyware
- No automatic updates
- No required account setup
- No ads
- No unwanted popups/notifications
- No registry
- No services
- No installers
- No app signing
- No “cloud”

I agree with most of these, but I’m curious why cryptographic signatures of executables is not something you’d like?

As a passive feature I don’t have a problem with it—that is, if it’s strictly about surfacing information to the user (while still allowing him to make the choice). But the operating system violates ownership if it prevents the user from running code that he wants to run.

In other words, I am not opposed to security layers, I am opposed to disallowing full user control at the most basic layer. I am also opposed to many shades-of-gray; for instance, making it obscure and complex to disable security layers.

A system where disabling security layers is difficult and obscure is “technically allowing the user to do what they want”, but its true spirit is obvious - complete disregard for the user’s own responsibility and abilities.
