People often do not appreciate how a more complicated language necessitates more complicated tools. A superfluous language feature might seem cool, but it isn’t free if it compromises a debugger’s or editor’s ability to be useful.

There was a good chunk of time where it was borderline impossible to debug or even read the error messages for nontrivial C++ template code. Things have gotten so much better in the past 20-25 years.

I wouldn’t say better. I look at it this way: C++ is such a nightmare that it took ~25 years for tooling to ~approximate the possible local maximum given the language’s complexity. Simpler languages mean cheaper/faster ecosystems, with more competition & less monopolization.

I can’t figure out, for the life of me, why C++ is even in the language discussion anymore. It’s a complete joke of a language. I will take C99 any day, but even then, there are plenty of simplifications one can imagine that blows C99 out of the water too.

My point was not that the tooling is in any way exemplary, just that it has gotten much better, relatively speaking. But I agree C++ is a dumpster fire.
