Text files, while limiting and underpowered, feel like solid ground. In my view, a solid next step is a broad, general-purpose data format open standard (with a tooling suite)—like text—but with primitives for graphical and structural information.

This marries the benefits of terminals, text files, text logs, and so on, with the opportunity for the dramatically improved UI/UX offered by graphical user interfaces.
