FOSS creates a bizarro software world where the ‘higher values’ they aspire to completely clash with a basic understanding of incentives.
COMPANY:
“So you mean we can just fork this repo, never have to deal with the maintainers, and use it to make money?”
FOSS world:
“Umm, honestly shocked and confused by COMPANY’s behavior?? Shouldn’t they be contributing to making the software better for EVERYONE?”
Meanwhile…
FOSS user:
“It would be great if this software did X”
FOSS maintainer:
“Feel free to open a PR that implements X! I can only do so much, but this is FOSS! We’re all in this together!”
PR stays open for years with no viable solution
