@ID_AA_Carmack Isn't that the responsibility of the hardware drivers, or are you proposing to have another layer between the hardware and the OS? Or perhaps it represents an aspect of the OS (Linux?) that is under-developed?

The OS only provides abstractions for conventional hardware, accessed in conventional ways. I’m suggesting a thin / easy / fun layer over the actual interface protocol for arbitrary device development. Maybe some graduate to OS abstractions, but it wouldn’t be necessary.
