Microsoft / Sony / Nintendo keeping their console SDKs behind NDAs has been a real issue limiting the sharing of open source work in game dev.
Jul 01, 2026
It isn’t the point of this project, but looking at the triangulations made me think about some GPU optimization esoterica.
Dec 23, 2025
Would papers get rejected if they used legal code with variable names instead of Greek laden pseudo code?
Sep 29, 2023
I remain unconvinced that mixed reality applications are any kind of an engine for increasing headset sales.
Feb 11, 2023
“Row/column major” should have been termed “row/column sequential” — “major” to me implies the larger step, not the smaller.
Jan 27, 2022
Address space randomization is a security feature that provides some benefits, but it is interesting to consider that all software ever written could be statically linked and coexist in a 64 bit address space.
Jan 03, 2022
When Unity and Unreal package textures and generate mip maps, are the mip maps generated with the same 2x2 box filter that glGenerateMipmaps uses, or a high quality multi-tap resampling filter? Even a very costly resample should be cheaper than good GPU texture compression.
Nov 08, 2021
The software side of dealing with custom hardware is unpleasant, and a drain on building it and exploiting it when completed.
Jul 08, 2021
WebUSB sure sounds like scope-creep.
Aug 09, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack They want absolute control on everything.
Jul 29, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack Open source thrives when the tools are visible.
Jul 26, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack The walled-garden problem isn't just SDKs — it's the worlds themselves.
Jul 26, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack ...
Jul 24, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack You really would like to think so.
Jul 24, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack Completely sensible pre-release but afterwards there’s way too many people with access to the info to assume the NDA accomplishes much against the actual threats but does make every legitimate user jump through hoops just to read the docs and crushes the community
Jul 23, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack Tangentially related, but I'm planning to release my games for old consoles like the PS1, and it's upsetting that I'm in a grey area if I wanna sell physical copies.
Jul 23, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack Trade secrets are the way to go to keep a distinct product others aren’t just trivially copying.
Jul 23, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack I am wondering why that is.
Jul 23, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack In fact it makes me not want to bother supporting their consoles at all.
Jul 23, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack Not only NDA'd but they they've even tried to sic law enforcement on second hand owners of the kits as @GamersNexus reported.
Jul 23, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack As most information hiding measures that end up hurting the public, they're the cause of someone doing the worst possible thing with information that's shared early in good will.
Jul 23, 2026
Not always possible.
Jul 23, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack More than that, they should also release source code for ancient games/unused engines.
Jul 23, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack this crossed my mind earlier this week for some reason, like i wondered if somehow a middleware could use a homebrew version of an SDK to still be compatible and open source??
Jul 23, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack I've been building homebrew apps for gaming consoles for years, using open-source SDKs.
Jul 23, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack Talking about open source I wonder what your take is on California Bill AB 2047 which is an attack on open source and 3D printers.
Jul 23, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack public docs help, but certification test suites leak platform assumptions that vendors still guard
Jul 23, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack Didn't Microsoft release their GDK to public? Only the GDK with Xbox Extensions and publishing need NDA, but you don't need them to enable dev mode on retail Xbox console.
Jul 23, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack <.< well there are the SDKs that were leaked for the olders consoles.
Jul 23, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack Not sure about #Sony with its brain dead current management, but #xbox now head pretty smart CEO , you really should personally approach @asha_shar and explain this to her and chances are she may remove all the NDA restrictions to make #Xbox more open for devs and games!
Jul 23, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack Not only should SDKs be open — console game dev shouldn’t be locked behind dev kits.
Jul 22, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack Yes just wanted to develop a little quiz game for my kids on the switch and NOPE
Jul 22, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack don't forget how Nintendo patents every video game feature under the sun, after that feature appears in other works already, and then sues you if you implement that feature into your game
Jul 22, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack and Sony/Nintendo shouldn't ? you so called pillars of the industry devs should do more..,rather than complain here looking for likes and what not, trying to bash microsft cause its fashonable,go talk to your colleagues and demand change, like it or not you are part of the problm.
Jul 22, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack Third-party libraries in general are a big issue in open-sourcing any sort of code.
Jul 22, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack the xbox 360 sdk is still under nda and that hardware is old enough to vote.
Jul 22, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack What do you mean? We made a GCC compatible Xbox toolchain.
Jul 22, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack Microsoft has partner NDAs to consider as well.
Jul 22, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack yeah a year after release is probably ample time to release the docs
Jul 22, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack When the XboxONE was coming out they specifially pushed that indies would have to have a publisher vouch for them.
Jul 22, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack With all due respect, John, I find it hard to believe that you'd expect Microsoft to know better.
Jul 22, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack Post-launch transparency feels like the obvious compromise.
Jul 22, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack Don't they NEED to control licensing for making games on their consoles to pay for the subsidized cost of the hardware?
Jul 22, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack small teams just skip consoles entirely because of this
Jul 22, 2026
The post-launch secrecy usually isnt about the SDK itself, its anti-cheat hooks and DRM implementation details that stay sensitive for the console's entire lifecycle.
Jul 22, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack Of all the projects Satya Nadella open sourced, one would think Xbox APIs should be open
Jul 22, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack Post-launch SDK secrecy turns solved engineering problems into duplicated effort, exactly where open source should accelerate everyone.
Jul 22, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack If sharing basic tooling means calling a lawyer first, small teams just won't.
Jul 22, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack They don't make you sign an NDA to view the Direct3D documentation or download Visual Studio Community Edition.
Jul 22, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack open sourcing your own console sdk is like using seppukku as your war strategy
Jul 22, 2026
There's a pernicious idea in companies that their documentation is somehow valuable on it's own and it behooves them to prevent competitors from seeing it.
Jul 22, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack i dont understand why there needs to be so much custom sdk? Why not say we do vulkan have fun.
Jul 22, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack If you want to develop software or hardware for like a game engine its kinda...
Jul 22, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack The whole idea for a console is for everything to be as closed and integrated as possible.
Jul 22, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack In the AI age to come, I bet we'll have some open source console competitors.
Jul 22, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack They have the “hobby” SDK available and also have a free dev mode unlock for retail consoles.
Jul 22, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack it forces open source engines into this endless dance of clean-room abstraction layers just to target hardware that's been out for a decade.
Jul 06, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack This is the part of the AI story that gets skipped: the models get the headlines, but someone still has to make the triangle order not suck.
Jul 04, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack Hey John, what happened to your local AI rack? Did you do something cool with it? Models are much more powerful these days.
Jul 03, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack FYI I'm stealing this: "having an optimization worldview means always noticing the tradeoffs."
Jul 03, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack but they're cutting out circles inside circles, that's gonna be rough either way, better to draw the contents in a shader or have it be a different mesh ontop no?
Jul 02, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack The problem with MWT (total edge-length minimizing triangulations) is that they are expensive to compute.
Jul 02, 2026
Triangle ordering matters more than most realize.
Jul 01, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack underrated part of GPU optimization.
Jul 01, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack TLDR; carmack says to convex hull your letters and hull the whole word then retopo.
Jul 01, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack That's a fascinating edge case on edge lengths, I never thought about the 2x2 quad waste in planar meshes like that.
Jul 01, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack i don't have fable yet for me to understand this at a deep level.
Jul 01, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack Apply this granular, factual, analytical, excellent breakdown to the waste and excess of using AI data centers for boring basic chatbot functions, like contact info and hours of operation.
Jul 01, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack Would depend on the hardware target too, no?
Jul 01, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack I saw some video about those pixel quads being a pain in the ass, idk why we don't fix that.
Jul 01, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack Triangle count still matters more than most realize.
Jul 01, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack Btw, for a large number of small triangles (1-3 pixels), this problem also valid for modern GPUs, which is why software/hybrid rasterizers like nanite or CUDA-based popular nowadays:
Jul 01, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack Post bug fix version the original poster put up looks more inline with what you're saying here too
Jul 01, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack John, have you thought about to apply game engine logic to render language (as in context engineering) instead of pixels? Specifically, there are interesting parallells betweeen the frame budget constraint in graphics and the context window constraint - and upstream from there.
Jul 01, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack or or or calculate r^2 = x^2 + y^2 + z^2 for infinite polygons.
Jul 01, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack >There probably isn’t any real world case where this would be a crucial optimization
Jul 01, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack For ui work, this lesson never dies: total work matters but the shape and order of the work matter more, once caches, batches, and browsers enter the chat
Jul 01, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack This is a topic covered by an old blog post from @_Humus_ with some benchmarks https://www.humus.name/index.php?page=News&ID=228
Jul 01, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack Triangulation algorithms are RIDICULOUSLY finicky and near impossible to get right.
Jul 01, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack yeah, triangle count gets all the attention.
Jul 01, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack earcut does have an optional triangle area optimization pass based on delauney
Jul 01, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack don't you think gpus are going to be running the model that does the rendering soon enough?
Jul 01, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack Feels unreal to see my library get retweeted by my role model.
Jul 01, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack cách sắp xếp tam giác phẳng này làm mình nhớ lại lần mình tối ưu mesh cho dự án cá nhân.
Jul 01, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack also, these triangles are terrible for FEM, it's painful to look at those sharp edges
Jul 01, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack Love this way of thinking.
Jul 01, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack Could this graphic triangle building in GPUs has an Impact on AI? Given it also uses GPUs?
Jul 01, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack Inscribing the polygon first reduces fragment work and that leads to a better optimization than that of edges?
Jul 01, 2026
@ID_AA_Carmack It's just how big is the cell list for the mesh.
Jul 01, 2026
Notably this is *also* a problem in ray tracing: long and thin triangles end up degrading BVH quality which makes traversal more expensive.
Dec 26, 2025
@ID_AA_Carmack Code (when one doesn't use short cryptic names for variables and uses algorithms instead of explicit loops) is so more readable...
Dec 26, 2025
@ID_AA_Carmack Lots of hate in the thread.
Dec 25, 2025
@ID_AA_Carmack The reason for pseudocode is that it is assumed that the reader can "fill-in the details" by themselves.
Dec 25, 2025
@ID_AA_Carmack Definitely not.
Dec 25, 2025
@ID_AA_Carmack They wouldn’t get rejected, but they would get bound to a single language/stack.
Dec 25, 2025
@ID_AA_Carmack I mean - MANY computer graphic papers didn't need be a paper to begin with, a quick tweet/blog post/github project/shadertoy demo would have sufficed.
Dec 24, 2025
@ID_AA_Carmack I have a lot to say about the pretentious side of humanity that seeks to complicate things, under the delusion that it helps understand them.
Dec 24, 2025
@ID_AA_Carmack could 't we make a new journal that publishes code implementations of math papers? "Applied replication" or "Practical replication" or "transmodal replication" study.
Dec 24, 2025
@ID_AA_Carmack No, it’s usually just easier to use Greek due to line length.
Dec 24, 2025
@ID_AA_Carmack The solution is to write your own pseudopseudocode parser which converts what appears to be pseudocode to a real target.
Dec 24, 2025
@ID_AA_Carmack they'd probably call it 'unconventional presentation' and then reject it.
Dec 24, 2025
@ID_AA_Carmack I actually have two hpg papers with close to full implementations in the appendix, or split up into figures in the body.
Dec 24, 2025
@ID_AA_Carmack the paper has to be understandable to get accepted, but if it's too understandable it gets rejected
Dec 24, 2025
@ID_AA_Carmack 1.
Dec 24, 2025
@ID_AA_Carmack It's not about being smart, it's using the correct jargon, or better yet, making up new jargon and making sure everyone else starts using it.
Dec 24, 2025
I can state publicly that “once @ID_AA_Carmack is no longer a person who can sensibly program anything and be over there where such people exist; DAREISAY co-exist while not -exactly- loving each other- I can state publicly that @ID_AA_Carmack the woman is @special and I will represent him as what he will identify as; once that day comes.”-(FWTPS3727-redacted:(-censored-) (J))
Dec 24, 2025
@ID_AA_Carmack Its just to protect academics from the fact that most of them dont know how to write code well
Dec 24, 2025
@ID_AA_Carmack A ancillary benefit is that after studying computer science and physics, I found it relatively easy to read all of the signs when I travelled to Greece.
Dec 24, 2025
@ID_AA_Carmack Academic publishing standards aren't my lane—I track settlement verification and infrastructure constraints.
Dec 24, 2025
@ID_AA_Carmack I actually think we should ban non latin letters in all papers (written in English) - things should be named, period.
Dec 24, 2025
@ID_AA_Carmack The main problem is the lack of precision in our descriptions.
Dec 24, 2025
@ID_AA_Carmack The main reason is that you want perfect correspondence between variables in the algorithm and definitions/proofs.
Dec 24, 2025
@ID_AA_Carmack After doing a PhD, I came to the conclusion that academia is 75% performative BS like this.
Dec 24, 2025
@ID_AA_Carmack interesting!- i don't know cs or coding, but greek notation really helps when reading mathematical texts( though, i know this is just a convention that we might simply be used to it)
Dec 24, 2025
@ID_AA_Carmack An example of this done right, is the Clip paper, (lead author is also lead author of GPT).
Dec 24, 2025
@ID_AA_Carmack Even papers that utilize actual code have a huge crisis with regards to reproduceable results.
Dec 24, 2025
@ID_AA_Carmack Wow, I said this for ten years.
Dec 23, 2025
@ID_AA_Carmack If you pick the right journals, you'd be just fine.
Dec 23, 2025
@ID_AA_Carmack i hate math notation with all my soul, one of my GPT usages is "translate every symbol to a descriptive camelCase variable name".
Dec 23, 2025
@ID_AA_Carmack "I have to read carefully and am not familiar with the notation" => reject
Dec 23, 2025
@ID_AA_Carmack That papers are full of pseudocode, which cannot compile or be otherwise verified, is load-bearing in the extreme.
Dec 23, 2025
@ID_AA_Carmack How hard would it be for LLMs to transcribe this.
Dec 23, 2025
@ID_AA_Carmack Math papers often look like API drafts with deliberate bad naming to avoid bike shedding in the review process.
Dec 23, 2025
@ID_AA_Carmack Every time in DL, its much simpler in code than in complicated math mumbo jumbo
Dec 23, 2025
@ID_AA_Carmack One of the best use cases for LLMs I've found so far is to be able to chew them to better understand it
Oct 03, 2023
@ID_AA_Carmack The killer app of AR is not entertainment but Post-it notes.
Oct 03, 2023
The true "killer app" for MR should be the OS / Home UX.
Sep 30, 2023
@ID_AA_Carmack VR is better but I think MR is a harder problem to solve — so it's a good place to aim at.
Sep 30, 2023
@ID_AA_Carmack You are making yourself vulnerable to be the target of the next “640kb is enough for everyone meme 😂
Sep 30, 2023
@ID_AA_Carmack I think its Wrong to compare the Modes or Pit them against each other.
Sep 30, 2023
@ID_AA_Carmack MR seems like a novel accessory/recreation in a world ever expanding in external compute without integrating value-adding interfacing with the users' context(s)
Sep 30, 2023
@ID_AA_Carmack I think there is a case for the virtual screen to make life easier in lots of circumstances.
Sep 30, 2023
@ID_AA_Carmack i think ur wrong but that just makes me think that i am actually wrong..
Sep 30, 2023
@ID_AA_Carmack Carmack I was trying to answer you but I realized I was saying the same thing back to you.
Sep 30, 2023
@ID_AA_Carmack I don't have cash to place a bet with you.
Sep 29, 2023
@ID_AA_Carmack hello.I think that flight and driving rig simulators (e.g.
Sep 29, 2023
@ID_AA_Carmack We would need to define what would make Quest MR successful and over what time.
Sep 29, 2023
@ID_AA_Carmack I bet you a pizza and a 12 pack of diet coke that 50% of daily time in headset will be spent interacting with digital objects and social type experiences in MR within a year of launch
Sep 29, 2023
@ID_AA_Carmack I'll bet you one ZAR to a local SPCA that me, a total beginner for circuit board repair, will find value in mixed reality with it pointing out which tiny component does what and suggests where to put the multimeter to check for continuity, etc.
Sep 29, 2023
@ID_AA_Carmack I suspect you are not intimately familiar with just how much money there is in the "American gun enthusiast" market.
Sep 29, 2023
@ID_AA_Carmack Well you are saying ever, the techs way too 'look at my earpods' right now.
Sep 29, 2023
@ID_AA_Carmack "I remain unconvinced that mixed reality applications are any kind of an engine for increasing headset sales."
Sep 29, 2023
@ID_AA_Carmack I don't think it will increase sales but the technology could increase the possibility of better feedback loops for integrating the real world stimuli into the virtual world.
Sep 29, 2023
@ID_AA_Carmack I bet you $50 that when I try MR for the first time I’ll like it
Sep 29, 2023
@ID_AA_Carmack Aren’t we all going to be living in shipping container styled homes with no furniture in the future anyway?
Sep 29, 2023
@ID_AA_Carmack The utility is more in eye tracking for psych issues like ADHD - not the visual overlay.
Sep 29, 2023
@ID_AA_Carmack Look all I’m saying is that if my friends and I can play dnd across continents rolling virtual dice over actual tabletops I will give metaverse all of my money.
Sep 29, 2023
@ID_AA_Carmack I’ll throw down a lunch bet.
Sep 29, 2023
@ID_AA_Carmack @ID_AA_Carmack I think of mixed reality as an improvement to AirPods.
Sep 29, 2023
@ID_AA_Carmack I'm convinced that nothing will sell VR rapidly to the masses but eventually all these features will accumulate.
Sep 29, 2023
@ID_AA_Carmack Anime IRL (through AR) will encourage many incels to go outside, coercing them to join the workforce.
Sep 29, 2023
@ID_AA_Carmack I agree with you and I wonder: what’s your track record on this kind of predictions?
Sep 29, 2023
@ID_AA_Carmack No, no one cares about your pennies.
Sep 29, 2023
@ID_AA_Carmack The appeal of mixed reality is to bridge the socially awkward gap of VR.
Sep 29, 2023
@ID_AA_Carmack The bet: the loser pays 6 months Twitter bluetick fees of the winner + if I win, you make my previous reply tweet sticky on your timeline for a month.
Sep 29, 2023
@ID_AA_Carmack What odds? The obvious application that occurs to me is all sorts of educational/tutorial content, which might allow the user to learn some physical skill, like exercise, cooking, a musical instrument, etc.
Sep 29, 2023
@ID_AA_Carmack A crumpled 10 GBP note says that cartoony chatting AI NPC / agent / assistant characters hanging out on your sofas, kitchen table, bed etc will be compelling and endearing within a couple of years.
Sep 29, 2023
@ID_AA_Carmack Let’s do a humiliation based bet instead I’m a social worker im poor
Sep 29, 2023
@ID_AA_Carmack Both VR and MR will have a huge amount of exciting and useful applications.
Sep 29, 2023
@ID_AA_Carmack isn't it like holo lens for 500 bucks with a thousand vr apps and a couple hundred xbox games?
Sep 29, 2023
@ID_AA_Carmack I have something cooking that will work in both VR and AR for mainstream.
Sep 29, 2023
@ID_AA_Carmack Alright, I’ll bite.
Sep 29, 2023
@ID_AA_Carmack I actually think MR has greater potential than VR.
Sep 29, 2023
@ID_AA_Carmack Blade runner 2049 love scene using AR (I.e.
Sep 29, 2023
@ID_AA_Carmack $100 that whenever @NianticLabs releases PokemonGo on Quest it's the #1 game by revenue for over a year.
Sep 29, 2023
@ID_AA_Carmack The @tiltfive headset and @jeriellsworth are already a few years ahead taking on that bet 🤑
Sep 29, 2023
would it be fair to say this is accurate but only because the developers who would otherwise develop the "killer" apps for MR simply cannot afford the hardware to be able to do any development, I'm confident you are correct but only for now, give it a few years until the hardware is much cheaper and more accessible to developers and this will turn around pretty quick especially when you consider the commercial industrial applications, the gaming industry all come up with somthing
Sep 29, 2023
@ID_AA_Carmack The idea that when you’re in the kitchen, there’s a conveniently located recipe site window that will never get greasy is compelling…
Jan 28, 2022
@ID_AA_Carmack Running with this idea: You'd still need the kernel to map memory access to a "local" memory.
Jan 28, 2022
@ID_AA_Carmack You're talking about having some sort of global address registry for all software and that is gross.
Jan 28, 2022
@ID_AA_Carmack Seems like an @rsnous sort of thing: as part of releasing your software, you request an address space range for it to run in the Universal Coordinated Address Space.
Jan 28, 2022
@ID_AA_Carmack Apparently the Internet is estimated to store about 50 zettabytes of code+data.
Jan 28, 2022
@ID_AA_Carmack Also, 64-bit allows having buffers that never need a realloc when growing, with interior pointers etc, which enables all sorts of cool algorithms / systems / memory managers
Jan 27, 2022
@ID_AA_Carmack I was wondering - when building assets you could pre-bake them to fixed addresses and let virtual memory allocate real memory at that space.
Jan 27, 2022
@ID_AA_Carmack It can also streamline debugging iteration, for example, you'd be able to re-use data breakpoints, hash pointers consistently, etc.
Jan 27, 2022
@ID_AA_Carmack That would kill security updates.
Jan 27, 2022
@ID_AA_Carmack With memory safe languages you don't have to sacrifice security to do this either :)
Jan 27, 2022
@ID_AA_Carmack UPCs on barcodes have to be registered with an international organization so there are no collisions on physical products.
Nov 09, 2021
@ID_AA_Carmack This sounds like a translation problem.
Nov 09, 2021
@ID_AA_Carmack This is (slowly) becoming fun! Want to join the party? :)
Nov 09, 2021
@ID_AA_Carmack Since libusb has already been mentioned, but not the pcie equivalent, you're looking for VFIO.
Nov 09, 2021
@ID_AA_Carmack Serial-over-USB is a common one for scientific equipment.
Nov 08, 2021
@ID_AA_Carmack Isn't that the responsibility of the hardware drivers, or are you proposing to have another layer between the hardware and the OS? Or perhaps it represents an aspect of the OS (Linux?) that is under-developed?
Nov 08, 2021
@ID_AA_Carmack Isn't that more due to a lack of standardized low-level apis? Or the lack of interest from hardware producers to actually provide software developers with more than hardware specs?
Nov 08, 2021
@ID_AA_Carmack Interesting recent development has been 'writing' hardware in Python, e.g.
Nov 08, 2021
