There’s a pernicious idea in companies that their documentation is somehow valuable on it’s own and it behooves them to prevent competitors from seeing it. Because of this they make the documentation really hard to find.
One vendor we work with literally took their entire online documentation offline and you have to request a PDF now. “We don’t want competitors to get to it.” So instead you put it all in a searchable PDF they can just plop into an LLM? They made it harder on customers but EASIER on competitors.
That said, I’ve literally never heard anyone say “let’s go look at a competitors documentation and look for ideas to steal.”
