The biggest flaw in most systems’ designs is the belief that it’s possible to design a system free of flaws.

There are thousands of articles introducing the details of floating-point numbers, this one is mine.
Aug 03, 2023
Mike Day’s paper got me thinking about abusing floating point more so I had a use and made this little gem today… (compare to inv_lerp)
Jul 31, 2023
By “encouragement” I think he means “10 years of constant badgering”.

It’s very easy to tell when I named something.

Since @2DArray is working on a pico8-to-burst (lua-to-HPC#), I borrowed his parser so I could join the fun.

@mike_acton If you apply this tweet to itself, an interesting thing happens!
Jun 22, 2024
@mike_acton Ah, sounds like to many conditionals and too much nesting - both insufficient ;-)
Jun 21, 2024
@mike_acton What is an example for this? Asking because taking this advice literally would lead to not protecting from anything until it causes a system failure, which sounds as irrational
Jun 21, 2024
@mike_acton I'd love to hear some war stories inspiring this tweet

@mike_acton Most people misunderstand how to protect a system:

@mike_acton Most of them choose to use the internet, which is full of flaws!

@mike_acton This feels familiar… I often mess things up when I think too much ahead instead of just making a beeline for solving the problem.

@mike_acton Think there's a typo in https://www.altdevarts.com/p/fixed-point-as-compression:

@mike_acton What I'm missing, but maybe too niche, is how to convert a binary FP number to a decimal (text) representation, and back.
Sep 12, 2023
@mike_acton I thought I am dumb and don't understand the notation.
Sep 12, 2023
@mike_acton I'm pretty sure you wanted bitwise AND in the second line of this listing.

@mike_acton Is that a slide ruler in the picture?
Sep 11, 2023
@mike_acton Hey Mike looks like there's a small typo in the offset-binary table, last row last column should be 255-128 I think 🙂
Aug 13, 2023
@mike_acton prefix naming improves speed reading code because you do not need to retrace (go back) and check what variable is.

@mike_acton Interesting, but since float log2 and exp2 are newton raphsonable, in recent ip they tend to be machine instructions unto themselves

@mike_acton // what the fuck?
Jul 31, 2023
@mike_acton Wild.
Jul 31, 2023
@mike_acton That's a nice precision but shouldn't we just use rsqrtss ? It's less precise but surely faster in recent microarchitectures.
Jul 31, 2023
@mike_acton degree-2 one is also fun, 86 fold improvement.
Jul 03, 2023
@mike_acton long explicit names are the best, specially since almost everyone will use autocompletion anyway
Jul 02, 2023
@mike_acton I deeply hate people that don't spend time on naming things.
Jul 02, 2023
@mike_acton I like it that way.
Jul 02, 2023
@mike_acton Agree! #1 and #3 both apply to me, I'm in the middle on #2 - I try not to make the perfect the enemy of the good, but I do spend some cycles (somewhat proportional to the importance of the thing) to do a good job on naming, not always just the first name that comes into my head.

@mike_acton A worthy opponent of D3D11’s VPAndRTArrayIndexFromAnyShaderFeedingRasterizer!
Jul 02, 2023
@mike_acton Also, to share one of my variable naming pet peeves, I'm a big fan of listing units in variable names.
Jul 02, 2023
@mike_acton At one of the places I worked, we abhorred abbreviations in variable names because:

@mike_acton i typically come up with a better name after developing and using the system further.
Jul 02, 2023
@mike_acton This is the way.
Jul 02, 2023
@mike_acton I agree! Had this recently where I was told in a PR to change member names and parameters from eg exception to err and request to req.
Jul 01, 2023
@mike_acton No hate at all Mike! 🙏

@mike_acton Coming from C89 repositories with most functions named with a max of 8 chars, I appreciate that...
Jul 01, 2023
@mike_acton I hate reading code with the same var/func names due to limited tech vocabulary.
Jul 01, 2023
@mike_acton 2 is a mistake though, you need to think about the mental cycles of the thousand of readers of your code.
Jun 29, 2023
@mike_acton @2DArray Oh nice, I'd love to bridge the gap between my lua mesh generator and vertex shader while staying in lua.
Jun 27, 2023
@mike_acton Am I right in thinking this is running the entire Pico8 program at every pixel and then discarding all but the specific pixel it cares about? This is...
