I've been doing my weekly Science News for about 4 months now.

Mar 22, 2023

@skdh My ex went through an entire grad program for science/math/environmental journalism, thankfully he does more magazine-style stuff for the CA university system, not press releases

Feb 20, 2023

@skdh The first aim of a press release is to get journalistic attention.

Feb 19, 2023

@skdh resuming, the problem is between science and journalism, mainly the chief editor's dismissive care for their science journalist.

Feb 19, 2023

@skdh Why you don't get more attention than NDT I'll never understand

Feb 19, 2023

@skdh I watch your YouTube channel and I respect the work you do and you are certainly erudite but you still believe that CO2 is causing climate change and that wind and solar will actually work.

Feb 19, 2023

@skdh You do a good job though.

Feb 19, 2023

@skdh To quote the Movie The Right Stuff, “without bucks, no Buck Rogers”.

Feb 19, 2023

@skdh Q.

Feb 19, 2023

@skdh That says a lot about a lot.

Feb 19, 2023

@skdh Hang in there - this is really important stuff.

Feb 19, 2023

@skdh From my experience, the people who write the press releases have no knowledge of the field, and the scientists whose papers lead to press releases are usually not too concerned with that

Feb 19, 2023

@skdh This is most problematic in physics.

Feb 18, 2023

@skdh So who approves of those releases?

Feb 18, 2023

@skdh Science communication is probably a tough cookie to crack.

Feb 18, 2023

@skdh Thank you for the work you do.

Feb 18, 2023

@skdh To you have a sense about what the incentives are here that have lead to this equilibrium?

Feb 18, 2023

@skdh Is there a way to attach “sources” link to your YT episodes? If there is and you already do, where do I find them?

Feb 18, 2023

@skdh All reporting is hard, there used to be an understanding that powerful people/academics lie and the job of the reporter was to fact-check things like press releases by contacting other members of the field! Now the media are stenographers not reporters!

Feb 18, 2023

@skdh You almost got it! Have you read „Manufacturing Consent“ by Noam Chomsky? It’s not exactly about science publications, but it reveals a bunch of mechanisms that make the press even worse then you now know it is (at least I hope you extrapolate your findings to press in general)

Feb 18, 2023

@skdh A useful rule of thumb is to assume that general news reporters lose 10 IQ points when reporting on scientific topics.

Feb 18, 2023

@skdh University PR blurbs on research conducted at them are often seem to have been produced by the Creative Writing Dept.

Feb 18, 2023

@skdh Even Ole Roemer did face the weak press release about his discovery 1676 of the finit light speed by yearlong observing Jupiter moons.

Feb 18, 2023

@skdh Where is this feed of news not fit for The News? 🧟‍♂️

@skdh I think the same is true for "studies".
